Udaipur as a tourist, not looking too closely. Spirits are raised…

With all we had seen and experienced so far on the trip (the slums of Delhi, ill health, the death of our friend back home) I experienced a short moment of total peace and harmony while sitting on my balcony at the Lake Pichola Hotel, Udaipur.

Looking over Udaipur, a relaxing moment, November 2012

It was Friday evening, the smog had cleared a little. As the sun thought about setting the sounds of the mosque calling followers to prayer meandered across the water. As in peaceful response the more delicate bells of the Janist temple replied. Finally the church bells added to the chorus. None were trying to outdo each other, they flowed together and gave me my few minutes of peace.

It summed up how I had seen religion working in India, everyone getting on with their faith, lives inter-twinning, respect and space given to each other.

Udaipur, November 2012

I sat transfixed by the sound and the changing of colours as the sun sank lower. Yellows became deep strains of orange. This was my India moment.

Next time… a look at Udaipur. Peace before an encounter with the Indian army and their big machine guns! (and exploding beetles…)
